Everyone wants “a balanced life” and all around us we constantly hear about needing to achieve “work/life balance”. Yet more often than not, it seems like such an elusive concept. The dictionary definition of balance refers to the condition in which different elements are equal or in the correct proportions. However, achieving this kind of balance constantly, can be challenging and unrealistic. Instead, I believe that a balanced life is better understood as a constant state of flow, where the allocation of time and energy among various aspects of life fluctuates. There will be times when  certain areas require more attention and focus, while others may take a back seat temporarily. The key is to ensure that no essential aspect of your life is completely disregarded or
neglected.

To establish this flow of balance, it’s crucial to conduct regular audits of your life and be honest with yourself. Start by identifying the 3-5 things that are of highest priority to you and commit to dedicating at least some of your energy to them consistently. These priorities may evolve over time, but they remain at the core of who you are and the balanced life you seek.

Once you have your list of priorities, you can rate them on a scale of 1-10 to gauge how well you’re attending to each area and where adjustments may be necessary. Assess which aspects are currently commanding most of your attention. If you find that your actions are misaligned with your goals, it’s essential to make the necessary changes. For example, if you’re spending excessive time watching Netflix while aspiring to start a business, you’ll need to realign your priorities and allocate your time accordingly.

However, it is important to be compassionate toward yourself and consider the phase of life you’re in. There may be temporary circumstances, like a demanding work project, where you need to invest more time and energy. During such
periods, it’s important to communicate with your loved ones, express your limitations, and find ways to re-engage with them once the situation stabilizes. If you consistently find yourself out of balance, it may indicate a need for significant
adjustments. This could involve restructuring your schedule, setting boundaries with work, or delegating certain tasks. Evaluate each category on your priority scale and determine if non-priority activities are consuming your time, or if conscious shifts are required to regain balance.

Remember, achieving and maintaining balance is an ongoing process that necessitates frequent reassessment and adjustments. What works in one season of life may not work in another, and it’s natural to make mistakes along the way.

It’s a lifelong pursuit that requires flexibility and an understanding that balance is a state of flow.

Balance is a dynamic and ever-changing state, and it requires continuous effort and self-reflection. Below are some practical steps to assess your priorities and make conscious shifts to align your actions with your values:

1. Take time for self-reflection: Engage in activities like meditation and journaling to better understand yourself, your desires, and how you want to show up in your life.

2. Prioritize sleep: Eliminate non-priority activities and make sure you get adequate sleep. By managing your time effectively, you can create space for rest and rejuvenation.

3. Exercise regularly: Even short bursts of physical activity can boost your energy levels and enhance your overall well-being. Incorporate movement into your daily routine to stay active and focused.

4. Maintain a healthy diet: Nourish your body with nutrient-dense whole foods. Taking care of your physical health is essential for maintaining balance in other areas of your life.

5. Connect with a higher source: Find a spiritual or philosophical belief system that resonates with you. Cultivate gratitude and acknowledge the positive aspects of your life, while working towards a more balanced and fulfilled existence.

6. Re-commit daily: Each day, reaffirm your commitment to seeking balance and fulfillment. Continuously assess and evaluate your actions and adjust accordingly. Celebrate the moments when you feel in harmony and strive for more of them.

7. Seek professional help: Don’t hesitate to reach out to therapists, coaches, or other professionals who can provide guidance and support on your journey to a balanced life. They can help you navigate challenges and address any underlying issues that may arise.

Remember, balance is a personal journey, and what works for one person may not work for another. Stay open to adaptation and be kind to yourself along the way.

My hope is to change the narrative around “life balance” and make it accessible to everyone.
